The primary heating source on the Pine Ridge Reservation is propane and many families can not afford this necessity. Propane tanks are either 250 or 500 gallons. The local propane company, Dakota Plains, has a minimum delivery of 75 gallons. In 2014, a 75 gallon delivery cost $200. This amount may only heat a home for about 2-3 weeks, depending on usage. With severe blizzards and average winter temperatures reaching 10 °F and below, heating is a crucial matter of survival for these families.
We have started an account with Lakota Plains Propane. This is an emergency heating fund that will deliver much needed propane to the neediest families. We will be accepting donations of any amount year-round. Purchasing propane in the Spring and Summer is considerably cheaper and will help carry your donation to more people.
